Orientation For Newly Appointed Staff

Newly appointed Staff in the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have benefitted from a workshop and orientation organized by the Human Resource Division (HRD) Section of KNUST at the Great Hall Conference Room. This was done to inform and equip the newly appointees regarding their various duties.

Participants were taken through topics such as: University Governance and the Committee System, Ethics at the work place, Effective teaching skills, Identifying and Managing students’ behavior, Scheme of Service, and Office Management and Practice.

The facilitators also enlightened the participants on Effective Conduct of Examinations, Dealing with the Finance Office, as well as Management Information Systems.

The Pro Vice Chancellor, Rev. Professor Charles Ansah welcomed members of staff and encouraged them to take the orientation program seriously. He spoke on Mentorship at the University and said that, it is important for one to have an experienced person to guide him or her in order not to repeat mistakes. He continued that, having a mentor could be beneficial since one can share concerns, ideas and challenges with the mentor.

Prof. Ansah encouraged participants to imbibe the traits of self-development, trust, teamwork, and humility in order to learn from the mentor. He advised participants to be punctual, have a positive attitude, and to always act with courtesy and respect. He tasked them to ensure total quality by listening and meeting the needs of students who are the clients of the University and cautioned them against acts that will bring the University’s name into disrepute. Prof. Ansah added that, the future is bright for them as there is advancement and congratulated members on their appointments.   

Mr. Andrew Kwasi Boateng, Registrar, in his presentation on the “University Governance and the Committee System” enumerated the structure and hierarchy of KNUST. Mr. Boateng noted that their duties have been clearly spelt out in the Statutes of the University and advised them to read the provisions in order to act accordingly.

He also advised them to have strategic visions for their departments which will fit into the University’s Strategic Plan.

In his presentation, Mr. Ben Andoh, Deputy Registrar (HRD), walked the participants through the procedures for preparing for promotion, when to apply for promotion, requirements, assessment areas, among others. He further touched on some problems faced with the process of applying for promotion and ways to overcome them.
